Gala Concert Highlights

We closed the year out with an amazing Gala Concert. Students from all three campus performed a number of solo pieces as well as two large ensemble pieces. It’s always so impressive to see the progress from year to year, especially this year as our students take on an orchestral arrangement of Grieg’s “Andante Con Moto” in c-minor.

We’re looking to a great summer of music including our Summer Music Festival. Here are some of the highlights from the Gala Concert:

I didn’t work as hard as I should have on this piece. If I worked on this composition more and not at the last minuite then it might have been better, but it turned good anyway. I did most of this composition in the car, and it was sort of hard to remember all of the technical stuff. I still don’t quite remember anything Mr. Tsietlin teaches me but knew enough to write this piece. I was suprised that people liked my piece so much because I didn’t think that it was any good.

My Debut Foundations Recital

The Invention in D minor is really fun to play. The trills were probably the hardest thing to do physically, but now its my favorite part of the piece. I am now working on another Bach piece and I’m sure when I am done with it, it will be very fun to play as well. Isn’t Bach amazing!!!!!

All of Brahms Waltz’ are very beautiful. My favorite one is the 15th because it sounds like a lullaby.

We had a mini recital for our friends at our house. I played Fur Elise. We did it with the McPhersons (Eleos students), and the Nippings (our friends from Oregon).

Graduation Performances – Haydn C Major

Quinn Mcpherson performed the entire Haydn C Major sonata as part of his graduating performance form the Introductions in Piano Course. One of the best performances we’ve had of this piece. Congratulations Quinn!

Crucial Checkpoints – Bach and Beethoven

One of the must crucial steps in a student’s development is the ability to study their parts with the aid of a metronome. Most importantly it gets them used to the idea of adjusting their playing to the heartbeat of the music, not adjusting the heartbeat to their technical necessities.

On top of that, these are two of the most crucial pieces in early piano development. Bach’s Invention is deceptively difficult because of its complex counterpoint, and Fur Elise by Beethoven transitions from one technique to another instead of having just one technique for the entire piece.

Joey Roberts works on both during his lesson.

2009 Calvary Christmas Concert

Over the past few years, I’ve had the joy of working with a regular group of our students from all 3 campus in a childrens choir. These students sing at our Gala Concerts, and rehearse daily during our Summer Music Festival.

On December 5th, after only 1 rehearsal, they sang 3 pieces in a Christmas Concert at Calvary Church in Pacific Palisades. I couldn’t be more proud of how professionally and artistically they all handled themselves.
